Toronto Blue Jays vs.Oakland Athletic
It’s been 15 long years since the National League won the Midsummer Classic, but if ever there was a season for them to end that streak, it would be in 2010.
The National League will have an incredibly deep and talented pitching staff, headed by starter Ubaldo Jimenez. While Jimenez hasn’t had a great last six weeks of the season, he still enters this game with an incredible 15-1 record and 2.20 ERA.
Joining him on a staff full of power arms are several more pitchers that give baseball betting fans hope that this is the National League’s year. Included are Roy Halladay (10-7, 2.19 ERA) who has already thrown a perfect game this season, the Marlins Josh Johnson (9-3, 1.70 ERA), who may be baseball’s most underappreciated pitcher, two-time Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum (9-4, 3.16 ERA) and the underrated Adam Wainwright (13-5, 2.11 ERA).
However, that staff will have to deal with a versatile American League lineup that features speed at the top and bottom, with power in the middle.
Leading the American League is one of the best hitters of his generation, and one who might end up being historically good in 2010, Miguel Cabrera. The Tigers first baseman is in Triple Crown contention, as he leads the American League in both batting average (.346) and RBI (77), and his 22 home runs are just two of the league pace. Outfielder Josh Hamilton also enters this game with a .346 average and 22 home runs, while his Texas teammate Vlad Guerrero has 20 home runs and 75 RBI. Throw in Robinson Cano (.336 batting average) and Evan Longoria (.300, 13 home runs), and it’s easy to see why the American League is favored Tuesday night.
But when making your All-Star Game bet, you can’t count out the National League, which has a powerful lineup of their own. Albert Pujols (21 home runs), Corey Hart (21) and Ryan Howard (17) provide the pop, while leading hitters Martin Prado (.325) and Andre Ethier (.324) should be able to get on base in front of them.
They’ll be opposing a pitching staff that is talented, but not as deep as the National League’s. Tampa Bay’s David Price gets the nod on Tuesday night, entering this game with an impressive 12-4 record and 2.42 ERA. Jon Lester of Boston (11-3, 2.78 ERA) and Cliff Lee, will provide powerful lefty arms behind Price.
So with all the stars on display Tuesday night, who should be your All-Star bet? Go for the upset and take the National League.
